Congratulations, Steven Truscott

Steven Truscott was today acquitted in the rape and murder of 12 year old Lynne Harper that occurred 48 years ago.

This doesn't mean he didn't do it though. Even O.J. Simpson was found not guilty. I haven't followed this story as intently as I had meant to. I wish I knew more and I think I'll be reading for some time yet, however I feel that there was a "miscarriage of justice". And that miscarriage of justice may have occurred today.

I will try to make time to read the report. It is very easy to pick apart every single bit of evidence as the piece that is needed to convict. But when you take the sum of all the parts, including circumstantial evidence, it makes the case more compelling.

I just hope that the Canadian Justice System isn't worse today than it is alleged to have been in 1959.

Girl, 8, tells court of anger at street racers

Parents killed in May 2006 crash

Eight-year-old Katie Manchester walked confidently to the front of a Newmarket courtroom Wednesday and told a sentencing hearing she was "mad" at the street racers who killed her parents in May 2006... Dressed in pink and carrying a stuffed animal, the second grade student spoke about the loss of her parents. Since the accident, she has lived with relatives in Aurora.

If only the street racers were as brave. Their defence lawyer is seeking a sentence of "house arrest and community service". This is Canada, so they'll likely get it. It's perfectly okay here to kill people when you're "remorseful and young". As far as I'm concerned the 2 year sentence the Crown is looking for is too light.

The Canadian Medical Association called on governments Wednesday to bring in programs to cover catastrophic drug costs. Dr. Scott Cameron, the P.E.I. delegate who introduced the resolution, said the program should cover prescription drug costs that exceed three per cent of a family's after-tax income. He noted that in Atlantic Canada 25 per cent of the population doesn't have prescription drug coverage.

Maybe, big business drug companies shouldn't gouge people for prescriptions and then everyone could be healthy, including everyone's wallet.

The leaders of Canada, the United States and Mexico ended a two-day summit in Quebec Tuesday with a pledge to crack down on unsafe goods flowing into North America, while working to make the two borders more efficient and secure.

Okay. Now maybe we should start to promote a made in North America approach to solving the problem and tell big business no more Chinese outsourcing.
